The Civic Holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in August and is a well-loved tradition that gives Canadians a summer break.

Unlike Canada Day or Thanksgiving, the Civic Holiday doesn’t commemorate a specific event but is meant to recognize the contributions of local citizens and communities. In different cities and regions, the holiday can be named differently. For example, in Toronto it is known as Simcoe Day and in Ottawa it is called Colonel By Day. In Guelph, the Civic Holiday was renamed in 2006 to celebrate the original founder of the Royal City. It is now known as John Galt Day.
