Going on Vacation? Things to Consider to Keep Your Home Secure

March 5, 2025

Going on vacation is exciting! Be sure to plan ahead, to ensure your home remains safe, secure and well-maintained while off enjoying your vacation.

Securing your home and property is vital. Make sure all entry points are securely locked and that your windows are properly closed & secured.  If you have a security system, activate it for added protection. Motion-sensor lights or timers on outdoor lighting can make it look like someone is home. A trusted neighbour or friend can keep an eye on your property and alert you if anything seems amiss.

Arrange for any packages to be delivered after your return or have a neighbour collect them for you. If you receive mail delivery directly to your home, consider a temporary mail hold or have that trusted neighbour collect your mail until you return.

Some maintenance considerations to keep in mind. Adjust the home thermostat to an energy-saving temperature. In winter, make sure it is warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing and in the summer, ensure your home won’t overheat. If you will be away for a while, turning off your water supply to prevent leaks or flooding is a consideration. If snow is a concern while you are away, arrange to have someone clear your driveway and sidewalk to prevent safety hazards but also to make it look like someone is home.

It is a recommended idea to wait until you return from vacation to post any photos or information on social media. Real-time vacation information can be a trigger for unwanted attention on your vacant home. Don’t forget to arrange for your pets’ care while away and water your house plants.

By taking these preventive measures, you can ensure that your home remains secure and enjoy your vacation with peace of mind.

Bon Voyage!
